Rockstar Games has updated Red Dead Redemption with 60 FPS support for the PlayStation 5. This update comes after the game was re-released for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in August 2023.
Rockstar Games had initially planned a remaster for Red Dead Redemption. However, the project was shelved following the poor reception of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in 2021. Instead, the company increased its focus on the development of the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. Speculation about a potential remaster for Red Dead Redemption reignited in June 2023 when the Game Rating and Administration Committee in South Korea issued a new game rating for it. Further fuel was added to the speculation in July 2023 when minor updates were made to the game’s logos and achievements on Rockstar’s website.
The re-release of Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare mode on modern consoles was met with mixed reactions. While some appreciated the game’s availability on newer platforms, many expressed disappointment over the lack of visual and frame rate upgrades, the absence of a Windows release, the omission of multiplayer features, and the $49.99 price point. The trailer for the re-release received mostly dislikes on YouTube.
Originally released in May 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Red Dead Redemption is the second game in the Red Dead series and serves as a successor to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver. The game is set in 1911 during the decline of the American frontier and follows John Marston, a former outlaw. Marston’s wife and son are taken hostage by the government, forcing him to bring members of his former gang to justice.
