Sony Computer Entertainment and Naughty Dog released its action-adventure game The Last of Us in 2013. The player assumes the role of Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting Ellie through the devastated United States. The Last of Us is a shooter played in the third person. Players use firearms, makeshift weapons, and stealth to combat hostile civilians and cannibalistic beasts infected with a mutated Cordyceps fungus. In the online multiplayer mode, up to eight players may engage in cooperative and competitive play. Naughty Dog expanded The Last of Us: Left Behind with a single-player adventure starring Ellie and her best friend Riley. In July 2014, a remastered version of The Last of Us was released for the PlayStation 4. A Windows version of the remake of The Last of Us, Part I is under development however it was released on PlayStation 5 in September 2022.
